Description

Kaikoura is mainly known for its whale watching tours but as it turned out, a two year old was not permitted on the whale watching boats, so we went to the Kaikoura peninsula to find some other creatures of the sea, New Zealand fur seals.  There are often whole groups of them on the peninsula, but that day there were but a few.  A storm was brewing and it seemed that most seals prefer to be in the water at that time.  This lonely seal sleeping on the rocks looked oblivious to the weather around him. He lay there as the tide came in and drove the tourists back to their cars. While taking this last shot of him, I felt sad and happy for him.  He seemed lonely but on the other hand he looked so peaceful. Not quite sure which it was, I didn’t have the chance to ask him.
