Description

“You are not paranoid if they are actually following you”.

Hiking in bear country is always a little tense.  You know there are bears out there.  They can be in the bush next to you or be miles away.  You just don’t know.  When crossing areas with high brush you start talking out loud and paying more attention to sounds and movement around you.

In Parc National Forillon in Québec, Canada, there was a bear warning for the entire park and some campgrounds were even closed because of bear activity.  So we knew they were out there.

Traversing a patch of high brush on the trail to Cap Gaspé light house we could almost feel their presence, but could see anything.  After a few kilometers you start thinking you are paranoid and try to dismiss the uneasy feeling you have.

On the way back to our car, we had a nice vantage point of the trail we had been walking not an hour before.  Sure enough, standing on the path in the brush was a big black bear.  While standing there looking at him he turned as to wave us goodbye (or warn us not to return).  So not paranoid after all, just lucky the bear wasn’t too curious when we were actually crossing his territory.
